Liposuction FAQs Answered by Dr. Nathan
A TRIMMER YOU FROM HEAD TO TOE WITH LIPOSUCTION FROM MIAMI, FL EXPERT
Your body type – including tendency to develop fat deposits, their size, and their location – is largely a product of genetics and gender, influenced by lifestyle. Liposuction removes fat and contours the body, even in areas that resist weight control. At The Nathan Clinic in Miami, FL, Dr. Nirmal Nathan uses the latest liposuction techniques and instrumentation.
A BIT ABOUT FAT
In our body-conscious culture, fat gets a bad reputation. Some body fat is, however, essential for good health. Fat releases hormones that regulate metabolism, and it stores calories the body can convert to energy when food intake is insufficient. Fortunately, that doesn’t often happen for most of us. However, the result is a build-up of extra pounds and inches.
THE HUMAN BODY CONTAINS SEVERAL KINDS OF ADIPOSE TISSUE:
- Brown fat – Children and naturally lean people tend to have a higher percentage of this type. It aids in keeping the body warm.
- White fat – Generally more plentiful, white fat generates adiponectin, a hormone necessary for liver and muscles to recognize insulin. When there is too much white fat, however, adiponectin production slows down, leading to diabetes and heart disease.
- Visceral fat – This deep layer wraps around internal organs. It plays a significant role in insulin resistance and other health threats.
- Subcutaneous fat – This layer resides directly under skin. Subcutaneous fat is responsible for many appearance concerns, from double chin to muffin top, love handles, and more.
Liposuction is a minimally-invasive surgical technique for removal of subcutaneous fat. It is a true form of “spot reduction,” targeting specific problematic areas.
By the age of puberty, the human body stops producing new fat cells. Weight gain later in life is a result of existing fat cells expanding. Thus, mechanical elimination of adipose tissue with liposuction is a long-term solution. With a healthy lifestyle, the improvement is lasting. If you add pounds or inches after liposuction, it will be more evenly distributed, rather than accumulating in treated (formerly problematic) zones.
THE LIPOSUCTION/LIPOSCULPTURE PROCEDURE
Liposuction surgery involves small incisions through which slender tubes called “cannulae” are inserted. A cannula is used to break up and suctioned off fat. You may hear the procedure referred to as “liposculpture” because, with modern methods, treated areas can be re-contoured as well as reduced.
It is important to understand that liposuction is not a cure for obesity, nor is it intended for overall weight loss. The procedure is ideal for the patient at or near healthy weight, with moderate accumulations of fat that do not respond to exercise or dieting. An appropriate candidate is reasonably healthy without medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease. Optimal results require good skin elasticity and no existing skin or connective tissue disorders. While most liposuction patients are adults (there is no real maximum age limit), the procedure can be performed safely on younger individuals, as well.
Liposuction can be performed on site at The Nathan Clinic in Miami, FL, without need for an overnight hospital stay. If the liposuctions involves larger volumes or multiple areas, Dr. Nathan will perform the procedure at a surgery center or hospital. These facilities are equipped with the latest technology, giving Dr. Nathan the flexibility of several techniques. He selects the most appropriate depending on the area of treatment, and the amount of fat to be removed.
In the 1960s, European surgeons were experimenting with techniques to excise (cut away) unwanted fat. However, this could only be done in regions with limited blood vessels in fat deposits, to avoid excessing bleeding. Liposuction was pioneered as a less invasive alternative. Early methods used in the 1970s were still rather traumatic, though, and carried high risk of complications.
Today, Dr. Nathan uses much gentler techniques, which typically take only about an hour per treatment area. Due to the minimally invasive nature of liposuction, it is performed with local anesthetic at treatment sites, and light IV sedation to calm the patient.
With tumescent liposuction, treatment areas are infused with a liquid solution. Its base is saline, a simple salt water compound found in tears and perspiration. The tumescent solution also contains medications that constrict blood vessels, for minimal bleeding; and lidocaine, an anesthetic that numbs the treatment area internally for a more comfortable patient experience. A residual amount of the diluted anesthetic remains in bodily tissues, greatly reducing post-procedure discomfort.
After the tumescent solution is administered, Dr. Nathan uses a cannula to precisely sculpt fat in the layer just beneath skin. This technique encourages the resilient dermis and epidermis to contract over the treated area, while thicker fat in the substructure maintains smooth skin surface, reducing contour irregularities. Tumescent liposuction can also be used to remove larger quantities of fat from deeper layers.
Dr. Nirmal Nathan is a skilled plastic surgeon in Miami, Florida. He received his medical degree through the Honors Program in Medicine at the University of Miami. Dr. Nathan is among the most sought after plastic surgeons in Miami due to his expansive knowledge, skill and method of treating patients. In his practice, The Nathan Clinic Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, he provides the excellence that comes from experience.
With the ultrasound assisted technique, sound waves are emitted from the tip of the cannula to emulsify fat cells for easier removal. This method is appropriate for deeper fat reduction, to avoid chance of injuring skin. Dr. Nathan published an important and often cited research article on this technique, establishing it as a safer alternative to conventional liposuction. Laser fat removal has become very popular for fat reduction. Tiny fiber optic lasers are inserted with the cannula. They emit light energy in a specific wavelength that disrupts and melts fat cells so they can easily be suctioned off. Laser lipo has the significant added benefit of stimulating collagen production in deep skin layers, resulting in tighter skin over time. This characteristic resolves the long-time concern of post-procedure sagging skin, possible with traditional liposuction.

Miami Liposuction by Dr. Nathan
Plastic surgeons in Miami perform liposuction procedures to remove excess subcutaneous fat from problematic areas of the body (e.g., the abdomen, hips, neck). While performing this minimally invasive surgical procedure, surgeons can also contour the areas from which they are removing the fat. The other names frequently used when referring to a liposuction procedure are body contouring procedure, lipo and lipoplasty.
Can a Liposuction Procedure in Miami Serve as a Method for Weight Loss?
Lipoplasty is essentially a spot reduction procedure, which means that the surgeon targets specific areas; therefore, this body contouring technique is not a feasible method for weight loss or as a weight-loss alternative.
Which Areas of the Body Can Dr. Nirmal Nathan Contour Using Liposuction?
Dr. Nathan uses body contouring procedures to remove excess fat and contour areas of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise.
These areas include the:
- Upper arms.
- Thighs.
- Hips.
- Calves.
- Abdomen.
- Breasts (male and female).
- Ankles.
- Knees.
- Buttocks.
- Neck.
- Chin.
- Cheeks.
- Jowls.
Understanding Weight Gain
All throughout childhood, the human body produces fat cells. However, once an individual reaches puberty, the production of fat cells stops. During adulthood, weight gain results when these fat cells begin to expand. Since liposuction removes some of the existing fat cells, and the body does not produce more, the fat cells that Dr. Nirmal Nathan removes are gone for good.
Fat Reduction Surgery: Where It All Began
During the 1960s, fat removal experiments were being performed by European surgeons. These experiments involved the tedious task of cutting away unwanted fat. While the surgeons saw some success with this fat-removal method, to avoid excessive bleeding, this procedure was limited to certain regions of the body.
In the early 1970s, liposuction became available. Unfortunately, at this time, while less invasive than the excising method, this fat removal alternative was still rather traumatic. In addition, these early forms of liposuction put the patient at a high risk for experiencing complications.
The techniques Dr. Nathan uses today are much gentler and complications are rare.
Who Should Consider Having Liposuction in Miami?
A good candidate for lipoplasty is someone who is in good health. He or she must not have any conditions that could cause a complication during surgery or while recovering (e.g., diabetes, a weakened immune system, restricted blood flow).
The individual must be close to his or her recommended body weight, with moderate fat accumulations in problematic areas (e.g., the flanks). To ensure the patient receives the best lipoplasty results possible, he or she should have good skin elasticity.
Most of Dr. Nirmal Nathan’s patients who receive body contouring are adults. Since a maximum age limit has not been placed on body contouring procedures, as long as a patient is a good candidate for this procedure, Dr. Nathan is happy to perform the surgery.
As a highly experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon in Miami, Dr. Nirmal Nathan can also perform lipoplasty procedures for younger individuals.
What Issues Can Dr. Nirmal Nathan Address with Liposuction?
With a lipoplasty, Dr. Nirmal Nathan can address aesthetic issues as well as functional issues.
Cosmetic and functional reasons men and women choose to have a body contouring procedure in Miami include to:
- Reduce the fat accumulation on their hips (i.e., love handles).
- Improve the appearance of an irregular chin line and reduce fat deposits within the neck.
- Address fatty bulges or shape abnormalities that the patient cannot correct with diet and exercise.
- Reduce the fat deposits on a female patient’s inner thighs, which ultimately improves sexual function.
Limitations of a Liposuction Procedure in Miami
As with every procedure, lipoplasty has its limitations. This procedure does not improve skin surface irregularities (e.g., cellulite dimpling, stretch marks) or loose skin.
Since lipoplasty only removes pockets of fat from specific areas, this procedure is not a cure for general obesity. In addition, lipoplasty is not a substitute for eating healthy and exercising.
While Dr. Nathan can enhance a patient’s appearance with a lipoplasty procedure, following surgery, the patient should not expect to have his or her dream body. Nonetheless, most patients experience an increase in their self-confidence level after they recover from their body contouring procedure in Miami.
An Initial Consultation for a Lipoplasty in Miami
Dr. Nirmal Nathan recommends that his patients create themselves a list of questions to bring with them on the day of their initial consultation. This ensures that the patient remembers to ask all the questions he or she has for Dr. Nathan.
During this initial consultation, patients should be prepared to discuss their medical history, any current medical conditions, as well as the medications, herbal supplements and vitamins they take on a regular basis. If a patient takes several medications, vitamins or supplements, creating a list to place in his or her medical file is helpful. This list should include the medication dosage, frequency taken, length of time the patient has been taking the medication as well as the reason for the medication.
Dr. Nirmal Nathan wants to know what the patient would like him to address during a liposuction procedure in Miami. When discussing their desires, patients need to be candid with Dr. Nathan. The only way a patient can receive the results he or she desires is by ensuring the surgeon can clearly see the patient’s vision.
Once Dr. Nirmal Nathan understands the patient’s vision, he will perform a physical examination.
A physical examination with Dr. Nathan at his clinic in Miami:
During this examination, Dr. Nirmal Nathan determines the quality of the patient’s skin, as well as the amount of subcutaneous fat that the patient has in the potential treatment areas.
If, after the physical exam, Dr. Nathan believes that the patient is a good candidate for lipoplasty, and the patient decides to move forward with the procedure, Dr. Nirmal Nathan or a medical assistant takes photos. Dr. Nathan uses these photos while he creates the patient’s personalized body contouring treatment plan. These photos are confidential.
Alternative Treatments
Patients who are not good candidates for a lipoplasty procedure may be ideal for another plastic surgery procedure that Dr. Nirmal Nathan performs.
Alternative treatments to liposuction in Miami include:
- An abdominoplasty (aka tummy tuck).
- Fatty tumor removal (aka lipoma removal).
- A reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction procedure).
Some patients are good candidates for multiple procedures during the same surgical session.

Actual Patient. Individual results may vary from patient to patient.
Presurgical Medical Testing
Patients who need a medical release from their general practitioner, blood work or any other tests (e.g., an EKG, a urinalysis) performed before their lipoplasty procedure, must have everything completed and their medical release no later than a week before surgery. This gives Dr. Nirmal Nathan enough time to receive and review the information. Patients who neglect to complete their testing and obtain their medical release within this timeframe will need to reschedule their surgery.
Find a Driver
Patients need to ask someone to drive them home from their liposuction procedure. Although the patient may not need assistance, Dr. Nathan recommends that his patients choose an individual capable of helping them while they get in and out of the car, as well as while walking and climbing stairs (if applicable). Patients also require an overnight caregiver.
Choosing an Overnight Caregiver
As long as the driver meets the following criteria, he or she could be a good candidate to serve as the patient’s caregiver.
The caregiver should be:
- Someone the patient trusts.
- Able to assist the patient with walking, standing up and sitting down.
- Someone that the patient feels completely comfortable with. This is vital because the caregiver may need to help the patient dress and use the washroom.
Medications, Vitamins and Herbal Supplements
10 Days Before and 10 Days After the Liposuction Procedure in Miami
There are certain vitamins, medications and herbs that increase the likelihood of excessive bleeding. For this reason, it is vital that patients inform Dr. Nirmal Nathan of all the medications, vitamins and herbal supplements they take.
Dr. Nathan requests that his patients discontinue taking or, in the case of prescription medications, reduce the dose of certain medications, vitamins and herbal supplements for 10 days before surgery and 10 days after.
Medications include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., Motrin, Aleve) and blood thinners (e.g., Coumadin, Plavix). If the patient needs to take some type of medication during this 10-day timeframe leading up to surgery, he or she can take acetaminophen (aka non-aspirin, Tylenol).
Vitamins include K and E, as well as fish oil.
Herbal supplements to avoid include Ginger, Ginkgo Biloba and Kava Kava.
Patients who take prescription medications that are in this category need to speak with their prescribing doctor before they discontinue taking or begin reducing the dose of their medications.
Discontinue Drinking Alcohol at Least Two Days Before and Two Days After Surgery
When alcohol is present in the system, it can increase the amount of inflammation a patient experiences.
Discontinue Using Products that Contain Nicotine Four Weeks Before and Four Weeks After Surgery
Nicotine causes the blood vessels to narrow, which inhibits the circulation process. This narrowing slows the flow of blood, thus, negatively affecting the body’s ability to heal itself. Patients who continue to use these products (e.g., traditional cigarettes, pipe tobacco, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, smoking cessation products and cigars) are at an increased risk for developing open wounds, an infection and tissue death.
Recreational Drugs
Patients who participate in recreational drug use need to let Dr. Nirmal Nathan know of this practice because it could affect the amount of medication he or she needs during surgery.
Where Does Dr. Nirmal Nathan Perform Liposuction Procedures?
The location of a patient’s procedure depends on the specifics of his or her body contouring treatment plan. Dr. Nathan performs relatively simple lipoplasty procedures at his clinic in Miami. Patients receiving surgery at The Nathan Clinic return home after their procedure. Therefore, patients need to have a driver with them when they arrive. If a patient arrives without a driver, he or she will need to reschedule.
Patients who are having several areas addressed during their body contouring procedure in Miami, or if Dr. Nirmal Nathan is removing larger volumes of fat, he performs these procedures at a nearby surgery center or hospital. Patients who are having multiple plastic surgery procedures during a single session will also have their procedures performed at a hospital or surgery center.
The facilities Dr. Nathan uses have the most innovative technology and state-of-the-art equipment available. This allows him to use a variety of techniques during a single surgical session. The hospital or surgery center that Dr. Nirmal Nathan chooses for a patient depends on the areas of the body he is treating, as well as the volume of fat he is removing.
Some Patients Stay in the Hospital Overnight
If a patient has his or her liposuction procedure at a hospital, an overnight stay may be necessary. Dr. Nathan and the patient discuss the details of his or her surgical treatment plan before the procedure, including whether there will be an overnight hospital stay.
Patients who remain overnight still need to have a driver because an individual receiving sedation should refrain from driving for at least 24 hours.
Why Does a Patient Who Receives Sedation Need to Avoid Driving for at Least 24 Hours?
The medications that a patient receives during surgery can cause a slowed reaction time, which increases the risk of an automobile collision. Furthermore, patients taking certain medications for pain must not drive until they no longer need these kinds of medications.
Can a Patient Use For-Hire Transportation After Surgery?
No. The Nathan Clinic does not permit patients to use for-hire transportation following procedures that require sedation of any kind. For-hire transportation includes taxis, Uber, Lyft and buses. By following this policy, Dr. Nirmal Nathan ensures that his patients do not become victims of those who may have nefarious intentions at a time when the patient is somewhat vulnerable.
Even patients who remain in the hospital overnight need to have their own driver. While this patient is usually less vulnerable to nefarious intentions, he or she may need assistance entering and exiting the car, walking up a flight of stairs (if applicable) and entering the home. For-hire drivers do not perform these tasks.
What Patients Can Expect on the Day of Their Liposuction Procedure in Miami
Patients should arrive with their driver at least 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment time.
Patients who are having their lipoplasty procedure at The Nathan Clinic in Miami typically receive local or regional anesthesia injections. In addition, to help the patient remain relaxed during his or her surgery, Dr. Nathan usually provides the patient with a light sedative that is administered via an IV (aka twilight anesthesia).
If Dr. Nirmal Nathan is performing a lipoplasty procedure at a surgery center or hospital, the procedure is either more extensive or the patient is having multiple procedures.
The Difference Between General Anesthesia and Twilight Anesthesia
General anesthesia places the patient in a deep sleep and twilight anesthesia places the patient in a relatively light sleep. Dr. Nathan discusses the anesthesia he would like to use with the patient prior to his or her surgery.
Patient Safety Remains Dr. Nirmal Nathan’s Highest Priority
During body contouring procedures, the surgical team monitors the patient’s blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen level.
How Long Does a Body Contouring Procedure Take?
The procedure time for a lipoplasty procedure varies.
The length of time a body contouring procedure takes depends on several factors, including:
- How much fat the surgeon is removing.
- The number of areas from which the surgeon is removing the fat.
If the patient is having a combination of procedures, Dr. Nathan will provide him or her with information about procedure length ahead of time.
Body Contouring Techniques Dr. Nirmal Nathan Uses in Miami
The lipo technique (e.g., tumescent, ultrasound-assisted VASER-assisted or laser-assisted) that Dr. Nathan chooses depends on a patient’s specific needs.
When choosing a technique, Dr. Nirmal Nathan considers several things:
- The patient’s goals.
- The area of the body he is treating.
- Previous body contouring procedures (if applicable).

A Liposuction Procedure in Miami
Pre-Op
During the preparation process, Dr. Nathan uses a medical marker to create circles and lines on the parts of the patient’s body receiving body contouring treatment. These markings serve as a guide during surgery. The nurse or Dr. Nirmal Nathan may take photos of the treatment areas before surgery. Following the recovery process, patients use these photos for comparison purposes.
Body Contouring Techniques Dr. Nathan Performs in Miami
Procedure specifics depend on the technique that Dr. Nathan uses. Once the patient is comfortably asleep, Dr. Nathan begins the procedure.
1. Tumescent Liposuction (aka a Traditional Lipoplasty)
Dr. Nirmal Nathan infuses the targeted area with a sterile solution consisting of:
- Saline (aka salt water), which serves as the base of the solution and aids in fat removal.
- A medication (e.g., epinephrine) that causes blood vessel constriction. Constricting the blood vessels during surgery ensures that bleeding in the treatment areas is minimal. This medication also reduces the likelihood that a patient will have bruising and inflammation following surgery.
- The anesthetic lidocaine, which numbs the area internally. After surgery, some of the diluted lidocaine remains within the body tissue, which greatly reduces the discomfort the patient experiences after surgery.
Through small incisions, Dr. Nathan uses a slender hollow tube (i.e., a cannula) that is connected to a vacuum to sculpt the fat just beneath the skin. This vacuum suctions out the solution and the fat.
The tumescent technique encourages the skin to contract over the treatment areas and the thicker fat located within the substructure retains the smooth skin surface, which reduces contour irregularities.
Using the tumescent technique, Dr. Nirmal Nathan can also remove larger volumes of fat from deeper layers.
2. Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)
LAL is a very popular fat reduction technique. While inserting the cannula, Dr. Nathan also inserts tiny fiber optic lasers. These lasers emit a specific wavelength of light energy to disrupt the fat cells, causing them to liquefy. Once the fat cells liquefy, Dr. Nirmal Nathan removes them with the vacuum.
One benefit of the laser-assisted body contouring procedure is its ability to stimulate collagen production within the deeper layers of skin. Collagen is a fiber-like protein that maintains the structure of the skin. As the collagen accumulates, the skin becomes tighter. This increase in collagen production eliminates any concerns related to sagging skin.
3. Lipo 360
A traditional lipoplasty procedure targets the fat deposits in a single section of the body. However, with a lipo 360 procedure, Dr. Nirmal Nathan addresses fat deposits throughout a patient’s entire midsection. Other names for lipo 360 include liposculpture, circumferential liposuction, 360 lipo and 360-degree lipo. Using Lipo 360, Dr. Nathan removes fat deposits and uses fat grafting to contour the midsection.
Dr. Nirmal Nathan creates several small incisions throughout the treatment areas. These incisions are only about 5 mm. After injecting a sterile solution consisting of salt water, lidocaine and epinephrine (i.e., tumescent fluid). This solution numbs and reduces blood flow to the treatment areas. This solution also helps break-up the patient’s fat deposits free. Dr. Nathan removes the fat using a cannula that is connected to a special vacuum.
4. Lipoplasty with a Renuvion Treatment
Along with lipo, patients can have a skin-tightening, rejuvenating and resurfacing treatment called Renuvion (previously referred to as J-Plasma). This minimally invasive procedure uses energizing helium gas with radiofrequency waves to create cold plasma energy. Areas Dr. Nathan treats with Renuvion include the back, stomach, breasts, thighs, legs and arms. When Dr. Nathan uses Renuvion externally, it rejuvenates the skin by resurfacing it with cold plasma energy.
The Subdermal Renuvion Treatment
Dr. Nathan makes several small incisions in the treatment area. He places a long, thin tube through an incision. Dr. Nirmal Nathan uses high-energy heat in conjunction with cold plasma at the subdermal level to tighten the skin and cause collagen to contract. This technique allows him to tighten the patient’s skin from the inside out. As the body heals, new collagen forms and the patient’s results continue to improve.
Final Procedure Steps, Despite Technique
Closing the Incisions
Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Nathan uses stitches to close the incisions.
Temporary Drains
Some patients receive temporary drains; therefore, their incisions remain open for a short period of time. These drains provide a place for excess fluid to exit the body, which reduces inflammation.
Bandaging and Applying the Compression Garment
Dr. Nirmal Nathan or a surgical team member places bandages over the incisions and applies the patient’s compression garment. Bandages remain in place for at least two weeks, and patients wear their compression garment for a few weeks after surgery. These bandages and the compression garment applies pressure to the treatment areas, which reduces swelling and helps the body conform to the changes made during surgery.
What to Expect Following a Miami Liposuction Procedure
Following the use of general anesthesia, patients awaken in the recovery area. Dr. Nathan determines if the patient remains in the hospital overnight or returns home with his or her driver after spending several hours in recovery.
To prevent blood clot formation, patients need to walk around shortly after their procedure.
Patients will experience inflammation, numbness, pain and bruising. Dr. Nirmal Nathan may provide the patient with a prescription for pain medication and an antibiotic.
Patients who have sedentary or laid-back positions can return to work within a few days to a week of their procedure. Individuals whose work is more strenuous need to ask Dr. Nathan when they should return to work.
The patient returns to The Nathan Clinic in Miami to have his or her stitches removed at some point between days five and 10.
Dr. Nirmal Nathan’s lipoplasty patients usually start to feel better within a week or two.
Inflammation and bruising remain for about three weeks, nonetheless, residual swelling can continue for several months.
Patients need to refrain from participating in strenuous activities for at least a month following their surgery.
After a Lipo Procedure without a Renuvion Treatment, What Happens to the Skin?
Following lipoplasty, as long as the patient wears his or her compression garment as directed and the patient’s skin has good elasticity and tone, the skin in the treatment areas should mold to match the body’s new contours. During the initial consultation, Dr. Nirmal Nathan will determine if the patient’s skin has good tone and elasticity. These determinations help him decide if a patient is a good candidate for liposuction.
How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?
Patients should expect to see changes in their body shape within the first couple of weeks following surgery, however, patients’ results become more visible once they reach the four- to six-week mark. As long as the patient lives a healthy lifestyle, his or her lipoplasty results are lasting. Nonetheless, any weight a patient gains following a liposuction procedure will not be in the problematic areas that received treatment.
A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
Some patients choose to increase the size of their buttocks using their own harvested fat. During a BBL, Dr. Nathan removes fat from one area, purifies it and then strategically injects it into the patient’s backside.
Patients who are interested in learning more about the BBL procedure should ask Dr. Nathan about it during their initial consultation.
Liposuction Risks and Potential Complications
Although complications following a lipoplasty procedure are rare, every procedure or treatment has risks.
Risks and potential complications of a body contouring procedure includes:
- An allergic reaction to the medications or products used during surgery.
- A negative reaction to anesthesia.
- Lidocaine toxicity.
- Difficulty breathing.
- Excessive bleeding.
- Shock.
- Bumpy, withered or wavy-looking skin. This complication may be temporary or permanent and can result from uneven fat removal, unusual healing, as well as poor skin elasticity.
- Fluid overload.
- An accumulation of fluid beneath the skin (i.e., a Seroma).
- A spotted appearance on the skin. This complication arises when the cannula causes damage underneath the skin.
- Numbness, which may be temporary or permanent.
- Infection.
- Burns due to the heat emitted from the equipment used during surgery.
- Nerve irritation, which is usually temporary.
- The development of a fat embolism. A fat embolism occurs when loose pieces of fat break away, becoming trapped in a blood vessel, traveling to the brain or the lungs. This is a medical emergency.
- Heart, kidney or lung problems.
- An internal puncture, requiring immediate surgical repair.
- Irregular, uneven or baggy skin.
- Scarring.
The best way patients can reduce their likelihood of experiencing a complication is to choose a board-certified, well-seasoned plastic surgeon to perform their lipo procedure.
